The ukulele was invented in Hawaii as a local instrument.

False! While the ukulele is strongly associated with Hawaii, it actually originated in Portugal. It evolved from an instrument called the 'machete de braga,' a small guitar brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in the late 19th century. The name 'ukulele' is said to mean 'jumping flea' in Hawaiian, referring to the rapid movement of fingers across the strings.
